A Pawsome Guide to Hiking with Your Dog in Virginia, Plus Brews and Views

Introduction:

Embarking on a hiking adventure with your four-legged companion can be a truly rewarding experience. Virginia, with its diverse landscapes, offers a plethora of trails that are not only picturesque but also perfect for a pawsome outing with your furry friend. In this guide, we'll explore some of the best dog-friendly hiking spots in Virginia, as well as highlight local breweries and wineries for a well-rounded adventure in the great outdoors.

Shenandoah National Park:

Nestled in the heart of Virginia, Shenandoah National Park is a haven for hikers and their canine pals. With over 200,000 acres of protected lands, the park boasts more than 500 miles of trails, ranging from leisurely strolls to more rigorous hikes (I'm talking about you Old Rag!). By far, my favorite hike planning app and website is AllTrails, where you can find dog-friendly trails and sort by factors such as difficulty, length, and proximity to where you are. Be sure to check out the dog-friendly trails like the White Oak Canyon Trail, and after your hike, reward yourself and your furry friend by visiting one of the local breweries or wineries in the area, all of which you can find on Spot!

Local Breweries and Wineries:

Blue Mountain Brewery: Located near Shenandoah National Park, this brewery offers a relaxing atmosphere with craft beers, firepits, and stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Veritas Vineyard & Winery: If wine is more your speed,, Veritas provides a charming setting to unwind with a glass of wine and your dog by your side.

Great Falls Park:

For a mix of adventure and scenic beauty, head to Great Falls Park. Situated along the Potomac River, this park offers spectacular views and a variety of trails suitable for all skill levels. Dogs are welcome on the River Trail and the Swamp Trail, making it a perfect spot for a refreshing hike followed by a visit to a nearby brewery or winery.

Local Breweries (sorry no wineries nearby!):

Aslin Beer Co: Located in nearby Herndon, VA; Aslin serves up a wide variety of craft beers and some tasty bites that you can enjoy in their dog-friendly beer garden!

Juicy Brew Co: Also located nearby Great Falls National Park, Juicy Brew Co offers a laid back atmosphere where you and your dog are welcome inside and out!

Local Breweries:

Bluemont Vineyard: While not a brewery, Bluemont Vineyard is a must-visit for wine enthusiasts. Enjoy a glass of wine and the beautiful views of the Loudoun Valley with your leashed dog by your side.

Bluemont Hiking Trails:

Bluemont itself offers several picturesque trails that you and your dog can explore, such as the Bears Den Trail and Ravens Rock via the Appalachian Trail. Ravens Rock is a hidden gem along the Appalachian Trail near Bluemont. This moderate 5-mile hike leads you to an impressive rock outcrop with stunning views of the Shenandoah Valley. Remember to keep your dog on a leash and soak in the beauty of the Virginia countryside. After a day of hiking, reward yourself and your furry friend with a visit to Bluemont's local breweries, which not only serve up great craft beer but also amazing views!

Tips for Hiking with Your Dog in Virginia:

Leash Up: Many trails in Virginia require dogs to be on a leash. Ensure you have a sturdy leash to keep your pup secure and to respect other trail-goers.

Pack Essentials: Bring enough water, snacks, and waste bags for both you and your dog. Hydration is key, especially on longer hikes.

Check Trail Regulations: Before hitting the trail, familiarize yourself with any specific regulations or restrictions for dogs on the chosen route.

Be Mindful of Wildlife: Virginia is home to various wildlife (including black bears!), so keep a watchful eye on your dog to ensure they don't disturb or chase any animals.

Leave No Trace: No matter where you are hiking, be sure to pick up after yourself and your dog, meaning pack up their poop!

By combining the joy of hiking with your dog and exploring local breweries, wineries, and trails in the Bluemont area, you can create a memorable and well-rounded adventure in Virginia. Leash up, pack your essentials, and embark on a tail-wagging journey through the trails, brews, and views of the Old Dominion State!
